When a jump start is the right call
A jump start is the fix when a healthy battery has been run down by accident. It is a temporary measure when the battery itself is worn out.
- Headlights, an interior light or the hazards were left on.
- The car sat unused for a few weeks while you were travelling.
- The doors or boot were left open with the ignition on.
- The car is in a basement or a tight bay where a second car cannot reach it.
What the technician does
A booster pack delivers a controlled burst of current through fused, protected leads, which is gentler on a modern car's electronics than leads strung from another vehicle.
Inspect the battery
A battery that is swollen, cracked or leaking is not jump started. The technician checks the case and terminals before connecting anything.
Connect at the correct points
Clamps go on the battery or on the car's marked jump posts, with the earth connection made away from the battery.
Start the engine
The car is started on the booster and left running while the leads come off.
Test the battery and alternator
With the engine running, the charging system is tested. Then the battery's health is measured, so you know whether the fault was a one-off.
Jump start or new battery?
The test after the start decides it. If the battery still holds its rated capacity, a good drive will recharge it and you are done. If it has lost capacity, it will go flat again — usually at a worse moment — and the technician can fit a new one on the same visit.

After the jump start
Keep the engine running and drive for at least 30 minutes without switching off. Short hops will not put back what the starter took. If the car has been standing for weeks, expect the battery to need longer, or a proper charge.
Doing it yourself
You can jump start a car with leads and a second vehicle if you follow the correct order and the battery is undamaged. If you are unsure of any step, or the car is a hybrid or a European model with the battery hidden away, it is safer to call.

How long does a jump start take?
A few minutes once the technician is at the car. The battery and charging-system test afterwards takes about two minutes more.
Can you jump start a car in a basement car park?
Yes. The booster pack is portable, so the technician walks it to the car if the van cannot get down the ramp. Send the level and bay number.
What if the car will not start even with a booster?
Then the battery is too far gone to accept a jump, or the fault is in the starter or wiring. The technician tests it and tells you which, and can fit a new battery on the spot if that is the answer.
Will a jump start fix my battery?
No. It starts the engine; it does not repair a worn battery. A battery that went flat without an obvious cause will do it again.
