A classic Ambassador or Contessa is usually a weekend car here, and weeks parked in heat are hard on a lead-acid battery. Choosing the battery for a Contessa

We start with the build year and engine, then read the fitted battery label. The technician checks battery technology, amp-hour rating, case dimensions, hold-down and terminal side. A battery with the right voltage but the wrong case or terminal layout is not a sound fit.

The old battery is tested before removal and the charging system is checked after fitting. If the car needs a battery-management reset or registration, the technician explains the requirement for that version before the work is closed.

About Hindustan batteries

Hindustan Motors built the Ambassador near Kolkata from 1957 until 2014, a design taken from the British Morris Oxford that became the standard Indian taxi and government car for generations. Its stablemate, the Contessa, was based on the Vauxhall Victor and pitched as a more upmarket saloon. In the UAE these are cherished imports, usually owned by people with a personal link to India, and they need a battery chosen with their age and simplicity in mind.
