Proton is Malaysia's national carmaker, founded in 1983, and its history comes in three chapters. The early Saga, Wira and Perdana were built on Mitsubishi designs. Proton then developed its own cars, such as the Persona, Gen-2, Waja, Exora and Iriz, while owning Lotus for two decades. Mitsubishi-based Protons use Japanese-pattern batteries like their Lancer and Mirage relatives. Proton's own designs mostly continue with similar compact sizes. The Geely-era SUVs follow Geely's specifications and are larger cars with more electronics. Rather than guess across those families, send a photo of the label on the current battery; the size code and terminal side are what the technician needs.

The X90 introduced a 48V mild-hybrid system on some versions, which supports the engine but still leaves a 12V battery running the car's control units. The X50 and X70 carry more screens and driver aids than older Protons. On these newer models, match the original battery type exactly; do not fit a cheaper unit that may not suit the charging system.
A Saga, Wira or Waja that has lived through many Gulf summers will often have tired cables and corroded terminals as well as an old battery. The technician checks connections and charging output when replacing the battery, so a new battery is not blamed for an old wiring fault.
