VAZ is the Togliatti factory that builds Lada cars, and its model numbers tell a long story: the 2101 to 2107 saloons derived from the Fiat 124, the front-drive Samara 2108 and 2109, the 2110 family, and the enduring Niva 4x4 sold as the 2121 and later the 2131. In the UAE these are enthusiast and nostalgia cars, often kept by owners from Russia and Central Asia. They are simple to work on, but the battery must suit their Russian-standard layout.

Classic VAZ cars were designed around Russian-standard batteries, which usually place the positive terminal on the opposite side to the common European layout. The short factory cables leave little slack for a battery with reversed posts. Before we come, check which side the positive cable connects to, or send a photo, so the replacement fits without strain.
A Niva or a 2107 has little electronic equipment and starts on a moderate battery. Problems usually come from elsewhere: tired earth straps, corroded clamps, worn alternator brushes or old voltage regulators. The technician checks these while fitting, because a new battery on a poor charging circuit will not last a UAE summer.
Many Ladas here are weekend or collector cars that sit for weeks. Heat speeds self-discharge, and a battery that goes flat repeatedly loses capacity. Disconnecting the negative lead or using a maintenance charger keeps it healthy between drives.
