Since its 2005 redesign the 300 has carried its battery under the boot floor, with remote positive and negative posts under the bonnet for jump-starting. Many owners and even some roadside helpers assume the battery is in the engine bay because those posts are there. The technician works from the boot, so please empty it before we arrive.
A 5.7 or 6.4-litre HEMI in a 300C or 300C SRT-8 needs strong cranking current, and summer heat steadily erodes a battery's ability to deliver it. A battery that has lost capacity shows up first as a slow, laboured start. We match the cold-cranking rating on the existing label rather than simply the case size.
The Pacifica, Grand Voyager and Town & Country are family vehicles with rear air conditioning, powered sliding doors and entertainment screens. Those doors and screens are frequent sources of drain when a door is not fully shut or a screen is left on. If the battery keeps going flat, the technician checks for a standing drain after fitting the new one.
