Skywell is better known in China for the electric buses it builds in Nanjing than for passenger cars. Its car range is short: the ET5 electric SUV, the newer BE11, and the HT-i, a plug-in hybrid SUV that pairs a petrol engine with electric drive. Few are seen on UAE roads, and those that are have usually come through importers or small traders rather than an established network, which shapes the battery problems we meet on them.

Low-volume imports often wait a long time between leaving the factory and reaching a buyer: shipping, customs clearance, then weeks on an open storage yard. Nobody charges the 12V battery during that stretch, and a lead-acid battery that sits deeply discharged in the heat loses capacity it never gets back. A nearly new Skywell with a tired 12V battery is less surprising than it sounds, so a load test in the first year is worth doing.

The HT-i carries a petrol engine as well as a high-voltage pack, yet neither can be brought to life once the 12V supply has collapsed. The symptoms tend to look dramatic, with warnings lit across the cluster or a gear selector that will not engage, while the cause is often modest. We deal with the 12V side; the plug-in hybrid system itself belongs with a qualified workshop.
Skywell's reputation rests on its buses, and support for its cars abroad can be limited, so owners sometimes cannot get a part number even for the auxiliary battery. We do not need one. The technician reads the capacity, case dimensions and terminal orientation from the fitted unit and brings a match, or tells you plainly if the fitted type is one we cannot supply.
