Because the boxer engine sits low and wide, the battery shares tight space with the intake and fuse box. Many Subarus use relatively small batteries by SUV standards. Rather than upsizing the case, choose the best-quality battery in the correct size, with a cold-cranking rating at least equal to the original.

Newer Subarus with EyeSight driver assistance, auto start-stop on some models, and electric parking brakes can show warning lights when voltage drops during cranking. A weak battery sometimes shows up first as a cluster of unrelated warnings. Replacing it usually clears them after a drive, though some may need resetting by a workshop.
