BAW stands for Beijing Automobile Works, the name of the factory that built the original BJ212 jeep from the 1960s. Today it trades separately from BAIC's passenger-car business, although the two grew out of the same Beijing motor industry, and its range centres on rugged vehicles: the current BJ212, the Warrior family and several pickups, alongside light commercial models. In the UAE they are uncommon, but the ones we meet tend to work for a living on farms, building sites and desert tracks.

Corrugated tracks and loaded tray beds shake a battery constantly. If the clamp is loose or missing, the case can rub, the terminals work loose and the internal plates suffer, which shortens life far more than age alone. On every BAW we fit, we make sure the hold-down is tight and the cables are routed clear of sharp edges before we leave.

Fine desert dust settles on the battery and, mixed with humidity, forms a film that lets a small current leak between the terminals. Over weeks that slowly flattens a vehicle standing between jobs. Wiping the top clean and keeping the terminal covers in place is a small habit that helps, particularly on pickups parked outdoors at site camps.
Depending on market and year, BAW off-roaders and pickups have been offered with petrol and diesel engines, and a diesel asks noticeably more of the battery at start-up. Before we come, tell us the fuel type and whether the vehicle carries a winch, spotlights or a fridge, so the replacement has the cranking power and reserve the job needs.

No. Both come from Beijing and the names are easily confused, but BAW builds its own off-roaders, pickups and light commercial vehicles, while BAIC's passenger range includes the BJ40 and the X-series crossovers. We treat them as separate makes when matching batteries.
Run it for a proper drive at least once a week, keep the battery top clean and dry, and switch off accessories wired straight to the battery. If it still drains, we can measure the resting current draw when we visit.
