That big, rear-drive V8 saloon was a family and fleet favourite across the region for years, and many are still running. Each Mercury shared its engineering with a Ford: the Grand Marquis and Marauder with the Crown Victoria, the Mountaineer with the Explorer, the Mariner with the Escape and the Milan with the Fusion. They take American group-size batteries, and the Ford twin's fitment is a reliable guide. That makes sourcing easy even though the brand itself has gone.
On a Grand Marquis that has done many years of Gulf summers, cracked cable insulation, corroded terminals and a tired earth strap between engine and body are common. They produce slow cranking and flickering lights that look like battery failure. When the technician replaces the battery, checking the cables and charging voltage helps make sure the new one is not blamed for an old fault.
Mercury sold hybrid versions of the Mariner and Milan, sharing Ford's hybrid system. Both have a conventional 12V battery that powers up the car before the hybrid system engages. If one will not start, test that 12V battery first; the high-voltage battery is a specialist matter.
