That means AGM batteries across most of the range, typically around 60 to 90Ah depending on model and engine, and an intelligent battery sensor that manages charging closely. MINIs use an intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal that tracks charge, age and temperature, and the charging strategy relies on it. BMW Group recommends registering a new battery so the system knows it has been replaced; otherwise it may keep charging as if the old, worn battery were still fitted. We fit the correct AGM battery; registration needs BMW-capable diagnostic equipment.
A MINI's engine bay is tightly packed, and turbocharged Cooper S and John Cooper Works engines make it hotter still. Add a typical city pattern of ten-minute trips with the air conditioning on full, and the battery rarely gets fully charged. Two to three years is a realistic life here. Slow cranking after a hot afternoon, or start-stop no longer engaging, are the usual first signs.
The electric Cooper and the Aceman still carry a 12V battery for their control units and locks. If the car will not power up but the main battery shows charge, the 12V battery is the first thing to test. We replace it on site; the high-voltage battery stays with the dealer.
