Volvo's modern range, from the XC40 to the XC90, is built on Swedish engineering with strong emphasis on safety electronics, and nearly all of it uses AGM batteries, typically between 70 and 105Ah. Many recent Volvos go further, carrying a main starter battery plus a smaller support battery that keeps systems stable during start-stop. In UAE heat, both age, and a weak support battery can produce warnings even when the main battery seems fine.

Several Volvos built on the SPA platform, including many XC90, XC60, S90 and V90 versions, use a main battery and a small auxiliary battery. The main unit is often under the cargo floor rather than the bonnet. When warnings mention start-stop or battery service, both should be tested. We check the pair and tell you which one needs replacing.
Volvo's energy management, safety systems and start-stop are designed around AGM behaviour. A flooded battery will wear out quickly and can cause voltage-related faults. Many Volvos also expect a new battery to be registered to the car; we fit the right AGM unit and advise if registration with diagnostic equipment is needed.
B-badged mild hybrids add a 48V system, and Recharge plug-in hybrids and electric models such as the EX30 and EX90 use high-voltage batteries. All still depend on a 12V battery for start-up and electronics. We replace the 12V battery only; 48V and high-voltage systems are for the dealer.
